Can I say that, although this is an exclusive club, we are open to new members, but there are very strict membership guidelines. Yep, you need to understand the question 'do you think 6 litres will be enough?' Also, being a Lord or Lady is a necessary requirement.
Along with the ever beautiful Mr & Mrs W, I have two other incredible friends in the UK; the ever beautiful Mr & Mrs E. It was Mrs E who uttered those fateful words two years ago as we were arranging a weekend in London which included a concert in Hyde Park. The first year we took a picnic and our own drinks; between us we decided that six litres might not be enough but we could always buy extra wine at the concert. Yep, we thought that six litres of wine between three ladies might not be enough. Bearing in mind the concert was outside, in the heat and started early afternoon. Trust me when I say that six litres was more than enough.
We have since learnt our lesson and do not take either a picnic nor wine to concerts. It's safer to buy food and drink once we are there. The problem being, when you take your own, that you need to drink it's whilst it's still chilled and it's very easy just to sit and drink, not eating enough of the mounds of food you decided equate to a picnic. So this summer, our yearly Six Litre Club get together was at an Eighties Concert at the Olympic Park. We decided it would be safer to send the boys to queue for drinks when we needed them, thus slowing down the amount we could actually drink. Also enabling us to queue for food as and when we felt the desire to blot.
But back to the concert. It was the most amazing day of pure cheese. We arrived to the last few songs by Go West, and to be honest I was a bit gutted to have missed them, but Sharon and I were so busy chatting that we went the wrong way and had to catch up with the rest of the 'SLC'. Can I say that Mr Jason Donovan was nothing short of a legend, belting out hit after hit to a crowd that boogied and swayed joyfully along as he covered such classics as Joseph and his Technicoloured Dream coat, Any Dream Will Do and the inimitable Especially For You; sadly with no sign of Kylie.
So dungarees at the ready we were prepared for a day of great music which we undoubtedly got. And the Bananarama outfits where a great idea. Many girlies had dressed up in the classic froufrou skirts with neon colours blinding us from every direction but as far as I could see there weren't any other wannabe Bananas. Ears at the ready, another SLC accessory that started last year, and daisy sunglasses to finish off the outfits and we were good to go when the aforementioned ladies came to the stage; sadly missing the Rama to their Banana. These lovely ladies looked a tad excited to be back on the stage. You could almost tell that the excitement would be too much once they got home after their day out! They were great though, a bit older and probably not wiser, as were most of the crowd. Singing along to every hit, the crowd were on their feet throughout the Bananas whole set. Definitely worth the wait in the blistering heat.
The best was yet to come though. Now I've been wanting to see this gentleman for years. He was the most soulful male artist of the Eighties in my eyes. Quiffed and suited, he was as sharp as they came compared to many stars of that era. And he did not let me or the crowd down. Mr Rick Astley walked onto that stage still quiffed and suited, looking as dapper as ever. From our position at the back he looked like he hadn't aged a bit!! He was brilliant, definitely the best of the day, this man can seriously sing, and who knew he had a sense of humour. So we will 'Never Give You Up' 'Whenever You Need Somebody' we will be 'Together Forever'...
There were many other stars and one hit wonders from the 80's but these three really made a lasting impression. They thoroughly entertained the crowd and obviously loved every minute of being back on stage pelting out some of the best cheese music of their generation, the great thing about the whole day was seeing the wide range of ages enjoying the music from the 80's. There were young children, teenagers, young adults, adults and even a few grandparents, all enjoying the chilled out vibe of a day in the sun, soaking up some great music and dancing the day away. The thing about cheese music is that it's absolutely timeless, infact it seems to get better as it gets older.
During all of this though I haven't actually mentioned the boys. They too made an effort. DickyB got them each a fuschia pink trilby hat with sequins, which proved invaluable if we were in danger of losing them in the heaving crowds as they walked back from the beer tent. Video evidence of Mrs W and Mr E dancing the day away in a world of their own has been saved for a later date. Rhythm found two new dancers that day. To be fair, I think Mr E was the only one who was able to be in full motion that day; the other Pink Boys being wounded in action. He certainly made up for them though. There's a man who knows how to throw a few moves.
So after a fantastic weekend with the Six Litre Club I'm pleased to say that a reunion has been planned for October. Not quite an Eighties concert but you will find us rocking it out to Asking Alexandria in Manchester.
Ben, can we have tickets please? Promise we won't embarrass you... much!!
